Today, India’s COVID-19 crisis hit a grave new benchmark: 20 million
coronavirus cases and counting.

To the Indian-American community: So many of you have reached out to me
about your family and loved ones in India. My heart is with you. Most of
us know someone who has had COVID-19, and sadly many know someone who has
been hospitalized or has passed away.

This is one of the moral issues of our time. Billions of people across the
globe still need vaccines, yet over 100 countries, including India, still
don’t have access to it.

The COVID-19 pandemic will not end until we help the world end it. We must
call on the Biden Administration to support waiving restrictions on
COVID-19 vaccine technology so India and other countries are able to
produce their own vaccine supplies and protect their populations.

I applaud President Biden’s administration for pledging to provide medical
supplies and protective gear to India as they battle this devastating
COVID-19 outbreak. But we can and must go farther.

That’s why I’ve been a leading voice calling on the Biden Administration
to double down on its commitment to India and help save lives. I spoke
with the Indian ambassador this week about their needs, and our duty is
both clear and urgent: Permit the COVID-19 vaccine recipes to be licensed
so India and more than a hundred other countries can manufacture the
vaccines they desperately need.
