April has been a busy month of talking with legislators and making sure bills are being passed to keep students safe.

We started off the month on “Political Party with Adam Smith” talking about how we can prevent the next firearm massacre. No one should be worried about the safety of their children at school, and we’re working to make sure what happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL never happens again.

Also this month, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Broward County Public Schools, conducted special training for over 100 school resource officers from BSO and other local law enforcement agencies.

This training helped officers understand the challenges students on the autism spectrum face daily and learn how to better communicate with them. Enhanced training on how to handle uncommon events improves the chances of a positive outcome.

Further, earlier this month the Biden-Harris administration signed an executive order highlighting the importance of safe firearm ownership. We applaud the action by the administration and we look forward to working together in the future to continue to take further steps.

This month the Secret Service also released their report findings and concluded that stopping school shootings is possible with early intervention by someone close to a student possibly planning violence. The full report can be found on StandWithParkland.org. [[link removed]]

Lastly, in our legislative success for the month, both the Florida State House and Florida Senate passed SB 590, a bill that will strengthen mental health services in schools, require school districts and charter governing boards to assemble a plan for reunification during an emergency, and require school districts to coordinate with local governments and law enforcement agencies when making those reunification plans.

Perhaps the most important provision regarding transparency and accountability relating to school safety and a parent’s ability to make good choices is also contained in this bill. There is a requirement that schools notify parents when there is a threat of unlawful acts such as an active assailant, or murder.

This bill is a huge win for all of us and our cause of keeping students safe. The bill is now on its way to the Governor's desk for his signature!
