Mexico will this week bestow its Ohtli Award on UPenn Dean of Nursing Antonia Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN. The award is the country’s highest honor given to those who have helped Mexico’s diaspora—especially, young people of Mexican origin—in developing their potential. The award signifies the path that Villarruel has opened for many: Ohtli is a Nahuatl word for path.

Hawaii Report Breaks Down Nursing Workforce Education Levels
In its efforts to encourage more nurses to obtain bachelor’s or more advanced degrees, Hawaii has assessed its workforce. In a newly released report, the Hawaii State Center for Nursing notes how many employed RNs have associate degrees and how many have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing—and the barriers that keep nurses from furthering their education.
“The Research … Fortified My Decision To Have the Vaccine”
Two nurses who initially delayed getting vaccinated explain why they got the shots and are now vaccination ambassadors, in the latest Core of Care podcast from the Pennsylvania Action Coalition. “Vaccine Confidence: Nurses Turn Skepticism Into Action” is the first episode in a six-part series about building confidence in the COVID-19 vaccines.
Nurses hear it all—and when it comes to vaccines, the American Nurses Association wants to stay on top of just what people are saying. The ANA survey is meant to help the profession stay up to date on what questions patients and communities are asking, to keep health care professionals fully informed and able to respond.
Arm Yourself With These Facts To Talk About Vaccines
Some Americans are hesitant about getting vaccinated, and nurses are uniquely positioned to combat the myths that keep some from getting that shot in the arm. Elite Learning, focused on continuing education in health care, has compiled evidence-based data and answers that allow nurses to have respectful conversations with patients who have doubts, as well as encouragement for nurses who may be hesitant to take the shot.
Every community welcomes leadership, and now’s the time to get involved: AARP and the Nurses on Boards Coalition seek nurses to represent AARP on community boards working to improve patient care, support family caregivers, build healthier communities and advocate for policies that lead to better health and well-being.
