Happy Teacher Appreciation Week, John!
While every week should be Teacher Appreciation Week, I wanted to take some time today to specifically acknowledge and appreciate the teachers, educators, counselors, and mentors amongst us who nurture the future of humankind. I see you and I honor you.
I’m proud to be one of the few members of Congress who’s a public school educator. I used to say that if you can run a middle school effectively in the Bronx as I have, you have the experience to serve in Congress.
My decades of experience in the classroom and in our schools has given me an incredible amount of knowledge when it comes to how I legislate, represent my district of the Bronx and Westchester, and push for our progressive values.
So today, I want to hear your stories. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, will you please share your story about a teacher that changed your life — and how they did it?

I’ll start: I’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredible teachers throughout my career. But as a student, my favorite teacher was my 5th and 6th grade teacher, Ms. James. She gave us individualized attention to support all students in the exact way we needed. In one word: empathy.
Teachers, especially in public schools, have changed and saved millions of lives. Their work is what love looks like in action. I want all of us to remember and honor that, particularly as we continue the fight to center care in our economy — and to transform our nation into the one that we deserve.
If you’re open to sharing, please take a few moments to tell us about a teacher that changed your life.
Peace and love,
