Law Enforcement News Weekend Shootings, Other Violence Leave 6 Dead, Several Injured In L.A. County A spate of shootings and other violence rippled across Los Angeles County over the weekend, leaving six people dead and several others injured. The violence began on Friday, minutes before 3 p.m., when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies found a 17-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds in the 6600 block of Holmes Avenue. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to a news release. Just after midnight Saturday, Los Angeles police responded to calls of shots fired at a public housing complex near 114th Street and Parmelee Avenue in Nickerson Gardens. Officers arrived at 12:41 a.m. to find an 18-year-old man with gunshot wounds, unconscious and not breathing, LAPD spokesman Officer J. Chaves said. Christopher Castellan Roque, 18, died in his yard, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. Police have initiated a homicide investigation. In the early hours of Sunday, a shooting brought officers to the 13600 block of Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, a usually cheery block lined with eateries and shops. Two people — a man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s — had been shot and were taken to a hospital, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Mike Lopez said. Both are in stable condition, he said. Friends of another man in his 20s brought him to a medical center to treat gunshot wounds, according to police. Witnesses said there may have been an altercation that led to the shooting, Lopez said. Police detained one man, but it was unclear whether he was arrested, according to Lopez. Los Angeles Times 76,000 California Inmates Now Eligible For Earlier Release, Including Violent And Repeat Felons California is giving 76,000 inmates, including violent and repeat felons, the opportunity to leave prison earlier as the state aims to further trim the population of what once was the nation’s largest state correctional system. More than 63,000 inmates convicted of violent crimes will be eligible for good behavior credits that shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017. That includes nearly 20,000 inmates who are serving life sentences with the possibility of parole. The new rules take effect Saturday but it will be months or years before any inmates go free earlier. Corrections officials say the goal is to reward inmates who better themselves while critics said the move will endanger the public. Under the change, more than 10,000 prisoners convicted of a second serious but nonviolent offense under the state’s “three strikes” law will be eligible for release after serving half their sentences. That’s an increase from the current time-served credit of one-third of their sentence. The same increased release time will apply to nearly 2,900 nonviolent third strikers, the corrections department projected. Mercury News Restaurant Altercation Likely Led To Shooting That Left 2 Dead, 1 Injured In Mid-City Neighborhood: LAPD Two people are dead and a third person was injured in a shooting that investigators believe was prompted by an altercation inside a Mid-City bar Monday morning. The incident was reported near the intersection of West Washington and Crenshaw boulevards shortly before 1 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department Officer Vargas said. Arriving officers found three people with gunshot wounds at the scene, including two men between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. They were both pronounced dead. A gun was found next to one of the men killed in the shooting, Lt. John Radke said. The second man was found dead inside a red Ford. It was unclear if the deceased men had been firing at one another, Radke said. A female victim, described by Radke as an innocent bystander, was also struck by the gunfire. The unidentified female was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, Vargas said. Investigators believe the incident began with an altercation inside the nearby Gringo’s Mariscos & Beer restaurant and eventually spilled out into the parking lot. KTLA 5 Two Men Wounded In Shooting Near Westchester Park Two men were wounded in a shooting Sunday night in the Westchester area--just a few blocks from Councilman Mike Bonin's office--and where there is a growing concern over homeless encampments. The shooting was reported at 10:13 p.m. at Lincoln Boulevard and Manchester Avenue, according to a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations Center. The 35-year-old victim was hospitalized in critical condition and the 51-year-old victim was hospitalized with stable vital signs, she said. There has been concern over growing homeless encampments at the Westchester Park [a few blocks from where the shooting took place]. It's also the same location that Bonin has his Westside office. At last count there were nearly 80 tents that covered large parts of the park--including outdoor tennis courts used for youth sports. There's also a growing concern for the safety of seniors who use an adjacent senior center. Many residents are demanding that Bonin do something about an intrusion of trash, drug use and crime in the neighborhood. The shooting was believed gang-related, the officer said. Venice Current Man Wounded In Boyle Heights Shooting A man was wounded Monday evening in a shooting in Boyle Heights. Officers responded about 10 p.m. to the 1700 block of Industrial Way, near Washington Boulevard, and found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to the LAPD. The victim was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, police said. A motive for the shooting and detailed description of a suspect were not immediately available. MyNewsLA.com Friends And Family In Search Of 3 Missing Men Family members and friends of three men --none related--have distributed flyers in multiple parts of Venice with one common plea, help find our loved one. The mother of a missing 28-year-old man from Indiana says she hasn't heard from her son Eddie since December and is growing concerned. Melinda Brown traveled with her mother this weekend to Venice and other parts of Los Angeles, in search of Eddie. The two put up numerous flyers in the Venice area--including portions of the boardwalk where Eddie was said to have been living with his girlfriend. Friends of Guy Cohen--a missing 28-year-old man distributed flyers around Lincoln Boulevard over the weekend. The flyers are asking for help in finding Cohen's whereabouts. Cohen's friends say he is a gentle soul and from California. He is said to be driving a white Toyota Camry. A missing flyer was recently put up on Main Street near the A Bridge Home for 29-year-old William [there is no known last name]. William is said to be missing two teeth and has a star tattoo on his wrist. If you have information call LAPD. Venice Current Man Charged In Fatal Trader Joe’s Shooting Found Competent To Stand Trial A man accused of engaging in a gunfight with police that resulted in the death of an assistant manager at a Trader Joe’s store in Silver Lake in 2018 was found competent Monday, May 3, to stand trial. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lisa B. Lench set a pretrial hearing for July 22. Gene Evin Atkins, 31, has pleaded both not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity to murdering Melyda “Mely” Maricela Corado. He also faces 50 other counts, including attempted murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, and assault on a peace officer. Atkins is accused of setting off a chain of events on July 21, 2018, that led to the death of Corado, who was fatally shot by a police officer in front of the store in the 2700 block of Hyperion Avenue. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore confirmed in 2018 that the bullet that killed Corado was fired by an officer, not Atkins. The suspect, authorities say, surrendered to a SWAT team after three hours of negotiations following a tense standoff, with customers and employees held hostage at gunpoint. Los Angeles Daily News Boy Killed In South LA Shooting, Suspect At Large Authorities are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a boy in the Florence-Graham neighborhood of South Los Angeles Friday. The shooting occurred just before 3 p.m. Friday in the 6600 block of Holmes Avenue, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies arrived on scene to find a boy with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died, the sheriff’s department said. His name and age were not immediately released. No arrests have been made. There was no suspect information or word on a motive. The exact circumstances of the shooting were not confirmed. CBS 2 Man Dies In Shooting, Crash In Hawthorne A gunshot victim died after crashing a car in Hawthorne late Sunday night. The shooting occurred in the area of Crenshaw and El Segundo boulevards at approximately 10:45 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. At around the same time, Hawthorne police were called to a shooting in the 12000 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, as well as a nearby crash in the 3300 block of El Segundo Boulevard, the sheriff’s department said. At the scene of the crash, they discovered a man with several gunshot wounds to his upper torso, Hawthorne police said. He was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he died of his wounds, the sheriff’s department said. He was not identified. Deputies and police are investigating whether the original shooting call is linked to the gunshot victim in the car crash. There was no word on a motive in the killing. There was no immediate suspect information. CBS 2 LA Sheriff’s Department Officials Seek Help Searching For Missing 37-Year-Old Man From Lancaster Authorities in Lancaster are looking for a man who was last seen one week ago. 37-year-old Aaron “Sane” Acuna was last seen on April 26 at about 8 a.m. in the 43700 block of Country Side Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is described as a Hispanic male, 5’3″ tall, 400 pounds with short curly brown hair and brown eyes, wearing black sweatpants and a black sweatshirt. Acuna also has a scar on his knuckles from tattoo removal. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the LASD’s Missing Persons Unit at 323-890-5500. CBS 2 Police: Man To Face Murder, Other Charges In Arizona Officer's Death A man arrested in the death of one Arizona police officer and serious injury of another after they were struck by a stolen vehicle will face charges of murder and other crimes, police said. Jonathan Altland, 25, was transported to a hospital for unspecified injuries after being taken into custody late Thursday night at a Gilbert auto dealership where Chandler police Officer Christopher Farrar was fatally injured and Gilbert police Officer Rico Aranda suffered a head injury, the Gilbert Police Department said Friday night in a statement. Police officials did not immediately respond Saturday to telephone and email queries by The Associated Press about Altland's status and background and other information about the incident. The statement released Friday night said Altland “is facing charges of murder, aggravated assault and auto theft." Online court records did not contain information about the case and it wasn't immediately known whether Altland had an attorney who could comment on his behalf. Associated Press Chicago Police Say Shootings Are On The Rise This Year Chicago has seen a significant increase in shootings and homicides so far this year, compared with the first four months of 2020, police said Saturday. Statistics included in a news release from the Chicago Police Department reveal that a troubling rise in gun violence this year shows little sign of slowing down. The city had five fewer homicides this April than last April, but the number of shooting victims increased to 299 from 225. So far this year, 997 people have been shot, compared with 718 last year. The city has had 187 homicides — 31 more than during the same period last year. However, police did report some encouraging news about carjackings. According to the department, since adding 40 officers and four sergeants to a task force in early January, the number of reports of vehicular hijackings has dropped more than 55%. “Vehicular hijackings remain a concern, but Chicago is trending in the right direction,” said Superintendent David O. Brown. Police are on pace to seize far more guns than they did last year in the nation's third-largest city, where officers recover more guns annually than are seized in New York and Los Angeles combined. According to the Chicago Police Department, the 3,600 guns seized so far this year represents a 34% increase from the total in the first four months of last year. Associated Press Public Safety News One Found Dead After Greater-Alarm Fire Rips Through Commercial Building In South LA One person was found dead in a massive commercial fire in South Los Angeles early Tuesday morning. The greater-alarm fire was reported in the 1800 block of East 57th Street at 11:57 p.m. Monday. Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to find a one-story metal-clad commercial building ablaze, with the flames threatening to spread to several surrounding structures. Crews took a defensive position, protecting the surrounding structures. It took 67 firefighters about 72 minutes to bring the fire under control. One person was found dead. The victim was not identified. The cause of the person’s death and the cause of the fire are under investigation. CBS 2 Cell Phone Alert Notifies LA County Residents 16 And Over Can Now Get Vaccine Without Appointment A citywide emergency alert was sent to cell phones in Los Angeles today to remind people to get a free COVID-19 vaccine. "We're using every tool at our disposal to encourage Angelenos to get vaccinated," Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Twitter Monday morning. The Wireless Emergency Alert urged L.A. County residents 16 and up to get a vaccine, which is available without an appointment at most city-run sites, and to encourage their friends and family members to also get their shots. Los Angeles' city-run sites are offering more than 250,000 doses of the vaccine this week, which is the most the city has offered during the pandemic. That total includes 70,000 new Moderna vaccine doses, 45,000 new Pfizer vaccine doses and 3,000 new Johnson & Johnson doses that will be added to leftover supply. As of Monday, about 37% of eligible Los Angeles County residents are fully vaccinated, according to the county's public health.
