Hi there:
This is twice in two weeks that the Minnesota Senate has passed legislation that will make it harder for Minnesotans to vote.
Yesterday, they passed a "voter ID" bill that would take us backwards by making voting much harder in Minnesota - for no good reason. It's an unwelcome blast from the past.
In fact, just a few years ago, Minnesotans soundly defeated a proposed voter ID constitutional amendment. We need to beat this Voter ID law again and I need your help. Add your name right now and say you’re against making it harder for Minnesotans to vote.
I was an active part of the "Vote No" movement, traveling the state to try to show people that voter ID could shut out hundreds of thousands of eligible voters. When the voter ID proposal failed by a large margin, we thought the debate was over.
The bill that passed yesterday is especially harsh. It would put up new barriers to voting for students, nursing home residents, people of color, and many others.
Minnesota is the #1 state in America for voter turnout but we can't take our voting rights for granted. We have to push back against those who would use flimsy pretexts to limit the freedom to vote.
As Secretary of State, I'll work as hard as I can to make sure that the "voter ID" bill - or anything like it - does not become law. Please join me in adding your name and standing against any legislation that will make it harder for Minnesotans to vote.
Thanks for having my back.
Steve
