News From The Week Of September 30 - October 4, 2019
Friend:
I’ll start off with (what we think should be) the most exciting news of the week: AU’s 2020 National Advocacy Summit is now open for registration! From March 22 – March 24, 2020, AU supporters from across the country will join together to learn, connect, and advocate in Washington, D.C. I hope so much you’ll be able to join us! Our first ever advocacy summit is a big step for our movement, and it couldn’t come at a more crucial time. This administration is escalating its assault on religious freedom by using it to strip rights from so many of us- religious minorities, the nonreligious, LGBTQ people and women. We have to fight back and strengthen our own movement for church-state separation.
In just a few days, the Trump administration will argue before the U.S. Supreme Court that LGBTQ people aren’t protected from being fired from their jobs simply because of who they are or who they love. We need to make clear that our shared secular laws are what rule in America and that someone else’s religious beliefs should not control your rights.
I’ve said it before and you’ll hear me say it again when AU joins our allies outside the Supreme Court Tuesday morning – religious freedom is not a license to discriminate. Our founders intended it to be a shield that protects religion, not a sword to harm others. I hope you will look for our signs and join us if you’re in the D.C. area: [link removed]
As the Supreme Court hears arguments in these monumental cases, we must be there to voice our support for true religious freedom for all.
Thanks for being with us.
With hope and determination,
Rachel K. Laser
President and CEO

Americans Are Increasingly Supporting LGBTQ Rights. Will The Supreme Court?
The shift in public opinion on issues such as LGBTQ rights, marriage equality and trans rights since the 1990s has been nothing short of seismic. The Supreme Court should follow the public’s lead and come down on the right side of history in these new cases by solidifying critical non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people.
