Danger is bearing down on a mother and her child. She steps between the threat and her baby, sacrificing her own safety to shield her newborn from harm.
When her child is ripped away from her, this mother cries out in anguish—not for hours, but for days.
The next time she gives birth, she hides her baby in a secret place, so no one can take them away from her.
This is what a mother's love looks like. What it sounds like. What it feels like.
Is her love any less real because she isn't human?

This story isn’t hypothetical. On dairy farms, when calves are snatched away from their moms shortly after birth, the mothers wail in agony. Their hearts are broken.
Pregnant cows rescued from these facilities have been known to hide their newborn calves in the woods or bushes, away from people, because every baby they've ever had has been stolen from them.
And in an exploitative study in 2012, researchers threatened over 300 pairs of mother cows and their newborn calves, circling them like predators. Nearly all of the mothers positioned themselves between the threat and their baby.
This Mother's Day, show all the mothers and babies on factory farms that you care. When you make a gift today, you will help to create a world where their precious bond is no longer routinely broken for the sake of profits.
Right now, there is a threat bearing down on a mother and her baby. Will you protect them?
For all the mothers, and their babies,
Michelle Kucerak
Senior Vice President, Programs and Development
P.S. Cows aren't the only animals who love their young: Mother pigs are fiercely protective of their piglets, while hens and chicks communicate with each other even before the chicks have hatched. If you agree that these loving animals don't deserve the horrific treatment they receive in our broken food system, your gift today can be the change they need.
