John,
When I think back to a year ago, I remember the uncertainty we all felt. The pandemic took so much from so many. But I also think about friends like you ... and about the hardworking, resilient Heifer farmers around the world.
The people of Quito, Ecuador come to mind. Ecuador was one of the hardest hit countries in the world. Lockdowns meant that farmers who relied on markets to sell their produce had no way to make income ... and their crops were rotting. It also meant that families who relied on markets for food were at risk of going hungry.
Farmers were worried. But they didn’t let fear paralyze them. "Immediately, we organized to deliver baskets containing grains and beans, vegetables, quinoa, and bok choy at our customers' homes," says one farmer. Thanks to Heifer, they were able to leap into action to not only secure income for themselves but keep others from going hungry.
This community pulled together to help one another through the crisis. I know that the pandemic has been filled with fear and loss ... uncertainty and heartache. But it's also been filled with extraordinary kindness ... ingenuity ... teamwork ... and hope. Hardworking farmers in Ecuador and around the world, and friends like you, have shown that to be true.
So, thank you for being part of our Heifer community. Those farmers in Ecuador learned that they are stronger together ... Heifer is stronger with you by our side ... and, together, we are all stronger than a pandemic.
With all my thanks,
Kimberly Perrow
