• Quickest way to increase unemployment? Raise the minimum wage.
   

• Quickest way to make more people dependent on government handouts? Same answer.

• Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar held a news conference Monday to announce that – because of the state’s improving economic climate – lawmakers would have an additional $3.12 billion to spend. Jeramy Kitchen has the details.
   
• The Texas Constitution requires that the state comptroller submit a statement showing the state’s financial condition and estimating the revenue it can expect to receive during the next two-year budget period. The Biennial Revenue Estimate forms the basis of the state budget, and lawmakers must ensure that total appropriations do not exceed the available cash and anticipated revenues.
     
• With the updated BRE numbers, it is unclear what lawmakers or the current conference committee will do with the current draft of the budget document.

• Unclear?! Lawmakers should put the entire $3.12 billion towards property tax relief. (But don’t hold your breath.)

• “Thrilled to sign legislation that prohibits COVID-19 vaccine passports in Florida. Neither government, nor private businesses, will be able to condition your participation in everyday life on producing private health information.” – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

• The ongoing abuse of taxpayers and 2020’s push education for far-left policies led to a major grassroots backlash in a north Texas school board race. Robert Montoya has more.

• As a result of Saturday’s municipal election, Lubbock has become the 26th city in the nation to pass an enforceable ordinance outlawing abortion within its city limits, and is now the largest city in the United States to outlaw abortion. Mark Lee Dickson writes about how a dedicated band of Lubbock activists brought about the change.

• Congratulations to Republicans Susan Wright and Jake Ellzey. They advanced to a runoff after finishing first and second, respectively, in Saturday’s special election to fill the North Texas congressional seat left by Wright’s late husband, U.S. Rep. Ron Wright (R–Arlington). Erin Anderson has the details from the 23-candidate field.
   
• Susan Wright is the preferred candidate of former President Donald Trump. Jake Ellzey is a sitting member of the Texas House. A runoff election date will be set by the governor.
