2021 is about to become the worst year for LGBTQ+ rights in recent history, thanks to state legislatures and GOP AGs.
Friend,
2021 is shaping up to become “the worst year for anti-LGBTQ legislation in recent history,” with more than 250 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills introduced in radical state legislatures across the country (and eight already signed into law).
This surge in discriminatory bills makes our nation fundamentally less safe and less free for LGBTQIA+ individuals – especially trans youth, who are targeted in these new proposed policies.
But state legislatures aren’t acting alone. In Arkansas, GOP Attorney General Leslie Rutledge introduced a bill that bans trans athletes from participating in school sports. Her bill was signed into law last week, hurting young Arkansans and setting a threatening precedent nationally.
Friend, we elect Attorneys General to be our watchdogs, to represent us against injustices to our community – not enact dangerous legislation like Rutledge’s.
When Donald Trump tried to overturn health care protections for transgender peoople last year, a coalition of 23 Dem AGs sued his administration – and you can count on them to bring that same vigor to fighting back against new anti-LGBTQIA+ laws popping up across the country.
Of course, Rutledge isn’t the only Attorney General backing this kind of legislation. In 2019, 15 Republican AGs urged the Supreme Court to rule against workplace protections for LGBTQIA+ employees. And last year, 14 GOP AGs supported an Idaho law that prohibits trans high school and college students from playing on girls’ sports teams.
Republican AGs have a long, horrifying track record of attacking the humanity and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. As radical state legislatures continue spewing out hateful bill after hateful bill, the last thing we need are GOP AGs acting as accomplices.
