Greetings!
This is Burgess Owens, Republican Congressman for Utah’s 4th Congressional District, and I’m writing to correct the record on some of what you’ve been hearing recently about a piece of legislation in Georgia.

Democrats blasted this bill that would call for Voter ID and other election-securing measures, calling it “Jim Crow 2021.”

As a Black man who grew up in the Jim Crow South, I know that any comparison between this law and Jim Crow is absolutely outrageous.
Back then, poll taxes, literacy tests, and violence and intimidation at the polls made it nearly impossible for Black Americans to vote. My parents’ lives sure would have been a whole lot easier if Jim Crow laws just meant they had to show ID…

It is disgusting and offensive to compare the actual voter suppression of the era I grew up in with a state law that only asks that people show a driver’s license or utility bill.

I recognize the Democrats’ projection and fear-mongering for what it is, and I’m thankful that other leaders like Brian Mast can see the same.

Let’s not allow politicians who know better to get away with spreading lies and calling the Georgia legislation “Jim Crow on steroids.” Help Brian and I set the record straight and get the truth out to the American people!
Thank you for helping us fight for the truth,
Congressman Burgess Owens (R-UT)
