Chemical Abortion Compromises Women

In mid-April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relaxed the safety protocols for the chemical abortion regimen. Doctors are now allowed to prescribe Mifepristone or RU 486 through telemedicine and patients can receive them via mail-order pharmacies. Prior to this decision, patients could only receive the drug directly from certified providers after being seen in person and it could not be picked up from mail-order pharmacies. These restrictions are called risk evaluated and mitigation strategies (REMS) and ensure the safety of a drug’s user.

While pro-abortion advocates claim the FDA’s decision to halt the drug’s REMS provides easier access to abortion, it actually hurts women. The regiment is taken at home. Specifically, Mifepristone blocks the production of the hormone progesterone, which is vital to maintaining pregnancy. Then, usually within 48 hours, a woman takes misoprostol to expel her pregnancy. The side effects of these drugs can be lethal, like hemorrhage and sepsis. Not to mention, the emotional side effects of abortion on a woman’s well-being.

Sadly, the use of chemical abortion has increased by 120% in the last ten years. Consequently, Engage with Eagle Forum hosts Kirsten Hasler and Tabitha Walter look further into chemical abortion with Heritage Foundation’s Melanie Israel. You do not want to miss out on this opportunity to further engage in the pro-life cause.
