Our democracy — our country — is at a crossroads.
We can choose to construct a true democracy and set out on a path to the transformational change our country so desperately needs.
Or ...
We can stand aside and let the forces of reactionism, corporatism, racism, and fascism tear apart our democracy by blocking the votes of communities of color, doubling down on extreme gerrymandering, and entrenching plutocracy.
Of course, that’s no choice at all.
We have to mobilize NOW to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voter Advancement Act.
That’s why Public Citizen is partnering with the Transformative Justice Coalition, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and dozens of other organizations in a nationwide day of action this coming Saturday, May 8.

We’ll follow up with more details about how you can be part of the John Lewis Day of Action this Saturday, May 8 — from tuning in to an online presentation with high-powered speakers to participating in a socially-distanced rally near you.
Am I exaggerating in saying our country stands at a crossroads?
Just pause and reflect on the fact that Georgia has made it a criminal act to give water to someone standing in line to vote.
Really, think about that for a moment.
The ONLY reason to even contemplate such a measure, let alone make it law, is to block people of color from voting and to sabotage our democracy.
But there is good news.
We have available to us the pathway to advancing democracy and our progressive priorities: the For the People Act — sweeping democracy reform legislation we helped draft and pass through the House — and the John Lewis Voter Advancement Act.
We are THIS close to making them both law.
But we’re not going to succeed if we sit on our hands.

Together, let’s heed the great John Lewis’s charge to “make good trouble.”
For democracy,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
