E&E News ([link removed]) (5/3/21) reports: "An announcement by General Motors Co. that it would invest more than $1 billion at a Mexican factory that will build electric vehicles has angered the United Auto Workers union. GM said Thursday in Spanish on its Mexican website that it would make the investment at its Ramos Arizpe plant, which will become its fifth factory to make battery-powered vehicles. Three others are in the U.S., with another in Canada. UAW Vice President Terry Dittes says in a statement that the investment comes as GM is asking the U.S. government to subsidize EV purchases. He calls the investment a slap in the face to American workers and says GM vehicles sold in the U.S. should be made in the country, employing Americans. 'Taxpayer money should not go to companies that utilize labor outside the U.S. while benefiting from American government subsidies,' Dittes said. 'This is not the America any of us signed on for.'"

Repeat after me: California. Is. Not. The. Model.

** Washington Examiner ([link removed])
(5/1/21) reports: "Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware urged the Environmental Protection Agency to adopt strict anti-pollution standards that would end sales of new, gas-powered vehicles by 2035. Carper, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, wrote to EPA Administrator Michael Regan late Thursday, imploring the agency to apply California’s fuel and efficiency standards and arguing that U.S. leadership on green technology will 'encourage' businesses to invest in the United States rather than China, according to the Associated Press. The senator reportedly asked the agency to follow a deal reached between California and multiple automakers that would raise the average vehicle fuel efficiency of 50 miles per gallon by 2026. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state will ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035."

(4/27/21) reports: "By most US airline accounts, it looks as if the pent-up demand that’s dominated discourse for the past six months of 2020 into 2021 is finally being unleashed, as booking curves widen and yields for the country’s busy summer high season look promising. Of course, that demand is all leisure driven and concentrated in the domestic and short haul international markets. At this point, it is anyone’s guess when a large number of borders will open; but US operators think the same demand scenario that is occurring domestically could play out for long haul travel. However, the window for travel to Europe during the summer high season is shrinking quickly even as the EU has signaled it could allow US vaccinated travelers to visit the region this summer. Even corporate demand is beginning to thaw, and some operators believe that a 50% recovery in US business travel could occur before the end of the year."

(5/1/21) reports: "Major oil producers, for decades the natural resource industry’s top earners, are being eclipsed by once-smaller mining peers who are churning out record profits thanks to red-hot metals markets. It’s wild,' said Mark Hansen, chief executive officer of London-based trading house Concord Resources Ltd. 'The value right now has shifted from energy to metals.'"
