FIRST: New York was projected to lose two Congressional seats in the U.S. House following the 2020 census.
THEN: AOC redirected $1 million from her campaign operation to spread the word about the census using digital ads, flyers, and phone banks to encourage people in her district, half of whom are immigrants, to participate.
Because of this work and the tireless efforts of organizers and activists across the state, New York will only lose one seat (not two) which is a big victory.
Nevertheless, after losing seats in states like California and New York and with redistricting on the horizon, we will need to work harder to defend a Democratic majority in the next election. We came up just 89 people short of keeping both seats in New York, which proves how high the stakes are.
NOW: We’re asking if you can chip in $3 to help our campaign continue to organize communities in our district and support progressive candidates across the country who will fight for working families and defend our Democratic majority in Congress.
In 2022, we can’t leave anything up to chance. We know that elections can be decided by as few as 89 people, which is why we need to start laying the groundwork and organizing now.
It’s through door-to-door canvassing that we were able to get the word out about the census and that same organizing work is what it will take to win in blue, purple, and red districts across the country.
