Biden Delivers Address To Historic Joint Session of Congress
Wednesday night President Biden spoke to a Joint Session of Congress. Standing behind him, as usual, were the Vice President and Speaker of the House. For the first time ever, both were women.
President Biden articulated the central challenge facing us today:
"Can our democracy overcome the lies, anger, hate, and fears that have pulled us apart?
America’s adversaries –- the autocrats of the world –- are betting we can’t. . . . They believe we’re too full of anger and division and rage."
President Biden continued:
"We have to prove democracy still works — that our government still works and we can deliver for our people.
In our first 100 days together, we have acted to restore the people’s faith in democracy to deliver. We’re vaccinating the nation. We’re creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs. We’re delivering real results to people; they can see it and feel it in their own lives.
Opening doors of opportunity, guaranteeing some more fairness and justice — that’s the essence of America. That’s democracy in action. . . .
If we do that, we will meet the central challenge of the age by proving that democracy is durable and strong. Autocrats will not win the future. We will. America will. And the future belongs to America."
CEC To Consider Board of Elections Nominees
At the regular monthly meeting on May 17th, the County Executive Committee will consider a slate of nominees for the New Hanover County Board of Elections proposed by NHCDP Chair Andre Brown. The County Executive Committee consists of Precinct Chairs and Vice Chairs, County Officers, SEC Members, Chairs of Registered Auxiliary Organizations and Elected Officials. As usual, all New Hanover Democrats are welcome at the meeting, but only CEC members will be asked to vote on the slate.
