Hi John

Hauraki Plains School Buses

Last week I chaired a meeting for concerned parents about the changes to bus routes on the Hauraki Plains.  Also present were Hauraki Plains College Principal Ngaire Harris and senior officials from the Ministry of Education.  Changes were due to start at the beginning of the new term this week, but we’ve managed to get the Ministry to delay implementation of their plans for at least a term.

Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Petition

I have campaigned for more than a year to return the rescue helicopter to its purpose-built base at Whitianga for long weekends and the peak summer period.  Stephan Bosman, Walter Russell and Professor Kevin Pringle did our community proud when they spoke to the Health Select Committee in support of the petition signed by nearly 50,000 people calling for the helicopter to be returned.  They put forward a proposal that I think is a very workable solution.  It involves employing an extra “surge crew” of four people, that’s all, that would allow for a machine and a crew to be stationed at Whitianga for long weekends and summer peaks.  Thanks to everyone who has been involved in this process so far; it’s been a long hard fought battle to get to this stage.  Now we must wait to see what the select committee reports back to Parliament.

Anzac Day 2021

Anzac Day is always a time for solemn remembrance, but it took on added significance after what we’ve experienced over the past twelve months.  Last year we reflected from our living rooms and driveways on the sacrifices of our servicemen and women.  To once again hear the bugler play among fellow Kiwis at the Whangamata and Whitianga services was a memorable experience, as was the reading of the names of the fallen by the Head Boy and Girl from Mercury Bay Area School.  This year the reading was more poignant because the men’s photographs were projected on a screen as their names were read out.

Community Meetings

I continue to hold community meetings around the electorate.  The next meetings are being held in Whitianga and Thames.  These are scheduled after the Government’s budget announcement, so there will be lots to discuss.

Tuesday 25 May, 5:30pm, Mercury Bay Boating Club, Buffalo Beach Road, Whitianga

Wednesday 26 May, 5:30pm, Thames Civic Centre, Mary Street, Thames
