This past week, House Democrats and President Biden announced their latest progressive policy push: a national paid family leave program.
It's an incredibly exciting development for a long-time Democratic priority. The US is the only industrialized country without a paid family leave program. This is a commonsense, humane policy that would allow workers to take up to 12 paid weeks off to take care of a newborn or an ill loved one, among other scenarios. It would also bring the US into the 21st century and in line with our allies around the world.
Americans deserve to see this paid family leave bill become law. It's well past time to do the right thing.
It won't come as a surprise that Republicans are already grumbling about the cost. It's the same song and dance -- there's always money for tax cuts for their rich donors but never money for working Americans.
We need to help the Democrats who are willing to put their support behind this bill. There is little doubt that Republicans are already lining up attacks. It's our job to raise the necessary resources and signal that these Democrats won't be left to fend for themselves.
