Friend --
Last week, the Census bureau announced its final totals for congressional reapportionment, the once-a-decade event that determines the number of seats each state is entitled to in the House. The news was not good for Democrats.
Here's the rundown:
- +2 Seats: Texas
- +1 Seat: Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon
- -1 Seat: California, Michigan, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
It's clear that Democrats lost seats in blue states and that Republican made gains in red states. As a result, The Washington Post noted a “continued shift towards red states” and had the following analysis:
“All told, five seats will migrate from blue states to red ones. … Five of the seven seats being added also go to states under complete GOP control of redistricting, with three of seven being taken away coming from states in which Democrats have some measure of control over the maps.”
Long story short: Republicans can win back the House.
With the narrow majority Democrats hold in the House currently, fighting for every single seat just became even more crucial. Democrats need to be prepared to battle for each one that is within our reach.
