Welcome to another edition of FT Now! It’s been yet another eventful week in the news, so let’s get right to business! First up, more revelations about New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s coverup of nursing home deaths in New York are coming to light. Next, the petition to recall Gov. Newsom has qualified for the ballot in California with more than enough signatures. Finally, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has stripped local health departments of their ability to enact mask mandates as his state moves forward from the COVID pandemic.

Once Again: It’s Not Florida That’s Cooking the Books, It’s New York
What Happened:
According to a New York Times report, Gov. Cuomo’s efforts to cover up pandemic nursing home deaths in New York were far worse than originally thought.
Why You Should Care:
The calculated effort to change the official death toll in nursing homes is disturbing to say the least. Senior aides to Gov. Cuomo repeatedly pressed state health officials - over a span of five months - to not release the true number of deaths. On top of this, the coverup coincides with the time period Gov. Cuomo was writing his book about pandemic ‘leadership’.
What Happens Next:
While outrage has been building over Gov. Cuomo’s corruption, he has refused to resign or take any blame. Hopefully, he is held accountable either at the ballot or through impeachment.

Campaign to Recall Gov. Gavin Newsom Qualifies for California Ballot
What Happened:
The effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom has gained enough signatures to officially qualify for the ballot.
Why You Should Care:
Although there are still several procedural steps that must take place before the recall is proposed to voters, this is a major step for Californians fed up with Gov. Newsom’s hypocrisy, failed policies, and extreme pandemic restrictions.
What Happens Next:
The field of candidates hoping to replace Newsom is still taking shape, but the date of the recall election is expected to be sometime this November.

Tennessee Republican Governor Strips Mask Mandate Authority From Health Departments
What Happened:
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced that local health departments will be stripped of their power to enact mask mandates.
Why You Should Care:
This is a major step towards returning to pre-pandemic normalcy in Tennessee. As more and more residents are vaccinated, the need for restrictions has decreased drastically.
What Happens Next:
Gov. Lee pointed out that “it’s time to shift our focus now more toward recovery, and not restrictions,” so there will likely be more policy changes in the near future as vaccinations increase.
