The climate and ecological crises together constitute the greatest
threat humanity has ever faced. Technological remedies already exist,
but political barriers prevent their widespread implementation. The
role of capitalism in creating and perpetuating the climate and
ecological crises will be briefly outlined. I will argue that real
solutions are not possible within the framework of capitalism, and
therefore an alternative economic system is necessary. The only
sustainable alternative is ecosocialism.
Ecosocialism
includes free healthcare, free education, and free mass
transportation, but beyond that, how might an ecosocialist society be
organized? What constraints would likely be necessary on
industry and agriculture? What are some possible meanings and
functions of money in such a society? And given that most jobs under
capitalism are pointless or damaging, would there be more free time
outside of work? Or would the potentially labor intensive requirements
of sustainable agriculture limit available leisure time? These and
other aspirational and speculative aspects of an ecosocialist society,
assuming ecological destruction under capitalism has not progressed
too far, will be discussed.
