MAGGIE THROUP MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash

============================================================

On Thursday afternoon, a Royal Commission formerly prorogued Parliament in preparation for The State Opening of Parliament and a new Queen’s Speech to be held on Tuesday 11th May 2021.

When Parliament dissolved for the General Election in November 2019, in the midst of what was one of the biggest tests of our Constitution for over a century, no one could have foreseen the monumental challenge that lay ahead.

As has been said many times before, the Coronavirus pandemic is undoubtedly the biggest crisis in public health that any of us are likely to see in our lifetime and has meant that this session of Parliament has been dominated by the difficult but necessary decisions the Government has had to take in order to save lives and protect our NHS.

Over the last year we have provided over £350 billion of financial assistance to sustain jobs, businesses and livelihoods and have built one of Europe’s largest testing regimes, to support an evidence-based roadmap to ease restrictions, enabling people to reunite with their loved ones at the earliest opportunity.

In addition, because of the Government’s early backing for vaccination research, within a year our scientists have developed, tested and gained clinical approval for an effective COVID vaccine, enabling our NHS to roll out one of the fastest vaccination programmes anywhere in the world.

This session of Parliament also bore witness to the moment when we finally ‘Got Brexit Done’, with the passage of the European Union (Future Relationship) Act 2020.

Despite the huge challenges presented by the pandemic, the deal that the UK successfully negotiated was not only the first Free Trade Agreement the EU had ever reached based on zero tariffs and zero quotas, and but also delivered on the will of a majority of the British people by returning full control over our money, borders, laws, trade and waters after an interval of 48 years.

More broadly, the Government has continued to press ahead with delivering on its manifesto commitments to level up our society, including putting 8,771 more Police Officers onto our streets, presiding over record levels of Doctors and Nurses working in our NHS, implementing a new points based immigration system to control our borders and tackle illegal immigration and investing £640 billion in Britain’s infrastructure to improve our roads, railways, communications, schools, hospitals and power networks.

Taken together, these achievements are a clear demonstration of our Government’s commitment to building back better and have been delivered despite the challenging backdrop of the global pandemic.

However, I know that there is still much more to be done and I now look forward to the new Parliamentary session, when I will continue to ensure that the Government delivers on the priorities of residents here in Erewash.
Core Strategy Consultation Reminder
Further to my last e-news update, I wanted to remind you that there is still time to contribute to Erewash Borough Council’s second public consultation on the revised Core Strategy. The consultation will run until Monday 10th May 2021 and can be accessed on the Council’s website at ** www.erewash.gov.uk/localplan ([link removed])
.

I continue to share the very real concerns of many local residents that, under the revised Core Strategy, not only would all of the land allocated for new housing be in the north of the Borough, but also Greenbelt to the south west of Kirk Hallam and to the west of Cotmanhay Woods is still earmarked for development.

In my view, not only would the proposed developments be a retrograde step for our environment, they will also have a significant long-term impact on the established communities of Kirk Hallam and Cotmanhay, putting additional pressure on existing infrastructure such as roads, schools and healthcare facilities.

Although Members of Parliament have no formal role to play in the planning process, during the first public consultation I put forward a robust case to the Council, calling for the removal of development proposals on our Greenbelt in favour of further development of the available brownfield sites that we have across the Borough.

I want to assure you that I will continue to oppose the Council’s recommendations in the strongest possible terms and remain committed to fighting to protect Erewash’s precious Greenbelt as your local MP.

I know from previous campaigns that ‘people power’ does work, so please do have your say on the future of our precious Greenbelt before it is too late!

Fan-led Review of Football
Following another turbulent week off the pitch with the controversy surrounding the proposed formation of a European Super League, I am delighted that the Culture Secretary has brought forward the Government’s fan-led review of football.

The review, which is part of the Government’s 2019 General Election manifesto, will be wide-ranging in scope and examine the potential for changes to ownership models, governance, how finance flows through the game and how to give supporters a greater say in the running of the game.

The Secretary of State has appointed former Sports Minister, qualified FA football coach and avid football fan, Tracey Crouch MP to chair the review, with the final report expected to include recommendations on what steps can and should be taken, and how they should be implemented.

Football means so much to so many people across the country and teams are ultimately nothing without the loyal fans who support them through the good times and the bad.

Tracey is a fantastic advocate for the grass-roots game, and I have no doubt she will lead this root and branch review with the same passion she shows for her own team….even if it is Spurs!

I have already met with her to discuss the review and invited her to a match at one of our amazing local clubs here in Erewash so that she can see for herself the immense contribution that loyal fans make to community football.

Office Update

In accordance with Government guidance, all of my office staff continue to work from home. But this has not stopped us working to support you - my office can still be contacted by email at ** [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])
or by telephoning 0115 930 0521.

Due to the volume of work, I continue to operate a triage system rather than responding in a chronological way. So please do be patient if you are waiting for a response, but I’m sure you’ll understand that there needs to be a priority system in these unprecedented times.
