During his first major speech as Attorney General, Merrick Garland reflected on the state of our country and warned that domestic extremism is “still with us.”
The Justice Department has already charged nearly 400 insurrectionists and arrested 57 members of extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers for breaching the Capitol. New evidence suggests that these groups had a strategic plan to overthrow the election results by seizing the Capitol.
They used paramilitary gear and encrypted messaging to break in. They intentionally camouflaged their members to be undetectable to law enforcement. Leaders from the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers even banded together to plan the insurrection before January 6.
This wasn't “a rally that got out of hand.” This was planned, and as Garland warned, there will be more political violence in our future if we don't act.
The fact is, we can either let those who attempted a coup and fanned the flames of white nationalism get off scot-free or strip away their power once and for all -- and we choose the latter.
