On Wednesday, the Tennessee legislature approved two key pieces of Governor Bill Lee’s criminal justice reform package: the Alternatives to Incarceration Act and the Reentry Success Act. Focusing on non-violent offenders, these bills are intended to safely reduce unnecessary incarceration in Tennessee and ease transition back into society.
Just a few weeks ago, the Governor’s CJR package was teetering on collapse as a result of opposition from a small number of vocal prosecutors. However, ACU and its partner “Right on Crime” engaged in a full court press. ACUF’s Patrick Plein testified before the legislature about our conservative approach to criminal justice.
Pat Nolan joined former Texas Governor Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich on a panel moderated by Governor Lee to explain how we can lower incarceration rates and improve public safety results.
And David Safavian drafted an op-ed that ran in all three major Tennessee papers, explaining why the Volunteer State needs to improve its criminal justice system. Wednesday’s vote was a big win not just from a policy perspective, but for the ACU brand, as this package of bills would not have made it to the Governor’s desk, but for our coordinated efforts in the state. |
