1. A deep dive into public-sector union spending in 2018

Ballotpedia's reasearch on public-sector union membership and finances culminated this week with a look at political spending. Public-sector unions contributed $159.8 million to candidates for federal, state, or local office in 2018, according to campaign finance reports.

2. Early voting underway in Louisiana’s October 12 gubernatorial primary

Media reports have identified incumbent John Bel Edwards (D), U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham (R), and businessman Eddie Rispone (R) as the leading candidates.

3. Juul ends support for San Francisco measure authorizing sale of electronic cigarettes

The move is uncommon—proponents of a measure that’s already on the ballot do not often end their support of such an effort just prior to an election.

4. California could vote on 2020 ballot initiative regarding consumer privacy

The state legislature passed legislation on the issue in 2018. This ballot initiative would create a state agency to implement that law and expand its provisions.

5. Mississippi State Senate district will hold partial special election November 5

The special election will be a re-vote of a Mississippi State Senate primary held on August 6 that was decided by a single vote. This re-vote will be held in 5 of 16 precincts in Senate District 50, where the results of the August 6 primary were challenged.
