In Florida — where 4,855,677 people voted by mail in the 2020 general election —Republicans just passed legislation limiting drop box hours, requiring an ID when a ballot is turned in, and mandating voters request mail ballots more frequently. The most draconian measures passed were added to the bill when Republicans secretly met at 1:30 am on Tuesday.
We have every reason to believe Gov. Ron DeSantis will sign the legislation because it will make it harder for vulnerable Floridians to vote and easier for Republicans to win elections.
With the help of Cyber Ninjas (yes, you can laugh), Arizona’s GOP launched an “audit” of the 2020 election results. These Republicans fought to keep the media from monitoring their activity and even tried to shield the process from the courts. Arizona’s Secretary of State Katie Hobbs has dubbed this sham process a “fraudit” which is a perfect description considering a state Rep. who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol is part of this fraudit.
This sham audit could easily be duplicated in other states to sow doubt in our elections and make it easier for Republicans to pass voter suppression laws.
In Montana, where 15% of the population lives at or below the poverty level, the state now must spend $100,000 to fight in favor of voter suppression bills in court. It’s appalling that Montana taxpayers are now funding suits to defend unconstitutional and racist voter suppression bills.
In good news, Alabama state Senate Democrats are blocking the passage of a bill to ban curbside voting.
In more good news, this week we heard a great speech from President Biden that urged Congress to pass H.R. 1, a landmark voter protection bill that will substantially improve our voting systems, and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
Now, we know that it will be a hard fight to get any type of federal legislation passed, and that Republicans in state-houses are moving with these suppressive and racists bills at lightning speed - so we need to fight back. We need the resources to push for good legislation, and when bad bills pass, we need to hold those responsible, accountable. We need your help.
