New council homes in Nottingham a step closer

**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

I am delighted to see that plans for much needed new council housing are progressing and construction will be starting soon.?The council, along with partners Nottingham City Homes and Geda Construction, are building 36 one-bedroom apartments on?the site of the former Southchurch garages in Clifton.

The flats will go to Nottingham households on our council house waiting list.?There is a real need for this type of housing in Nottingham, especially from single people and couples. As well as regenerating the old site, we are building, warm, safe, and energy efficient new homes for affordable rent, which?will help meet the needs of local people waiting for a home.

*Making high rise buildings safer in Nottingham*

Nottingham skyline

Yesterday the Government passed The Fire Safety Act which is part of its response to the tragic Grenfell fire in 2017. However, survivors have criticised the legislation for passing on the costs for improvement works in high rise blocks onto leaseholders, rather than the Government or big developers covering the costs.

In Nottingham we are making sure we do the right thing. In the aftermath of the Grenfell fire, the council immediately launched an audit of cladding on all tall buildings, started the installation of sprinkler systems in all City Council owned high rise buildings and established the Joint Audit and Inspection Team (JAIT) along with the Nottinghamshire Fire Authority to inspect all appropriate residential blocks.

The cost of the sprinkler installation work to the council has been ?8.3 million but, despite promises at the time from the Government to cover those costs, we are yet to receive a single penny for it. Being safe in your own home is essential and people living in high rise blocks should not be financially penalised for that. I hope the Government will look again at this aspect of the Fire Safety Act and ensure that any costs for improvement work that is needed is covered by the Government or big developers.

Stay safe over the bank holiday weekend

Nottingham Arboretum

The best defence against Covid-19 is to be vaccinated. The age limit for the vaccine has now been lowered to 40. We are aware that only a limited number of appointments are available locally, but we have been assured by the NHS that more slots will come online soon ? so do keep trying. Nottingham is now using the national booking system for vaccinations, find out more NHS: book your coronavirus vaccination [ [link removed] ] or call 119.

We?re now about halfway between Step Two and Step Three on the roadmap that will take us out of Covid-19 restrictions and I?m encouraged that rates of the virus remain low in the city. Please let?s keep it that way ? especially as we approach the May bank holiday. Typically for a bank holiday, the weather is looking mixed, but I would urge people to continue to follow the rules about not mixing households indoors. We saw a spike in cases after the rules were relaxed at Christmas ? let?s not make the same mistake. We have to keep going ? please keep following the guidelines around ?hands, face, space and fresh air.? Let?s make it safely to Step Three when even more of our city will be unlocked.

*Same level of service will follow Day Centre closure *

Summerwood day centre graphic

We have taken the difficult decision today to close one of the three day centres that serve people with learning disabilities across the city. We know that service users have strong attachments to the centres they attend and we will be working closely with the small number who use Summerwood Day Centre in Clifton, and their families and carers, to ensure they are supported and their needs are met.

They will be given the option of continuing to access the same level of service at alternative centres with better facilities, or moving to the council?s ?Pathway? services which will give them one-to-one support with experienced members of staff to increase their independence and community participation. This increasingly is the preferred option for many adults with learning disabilities and while there is a saving of ?387,000 attached to this closure, this decision is driven by the need to adapt to new ways of meeting people?s needs and expectations.

*Visit your local library this weekend*

Digital libraries

Since they re-opened on 12 April, it?s been great to see so many people enjoying their local library once more. Our 13 library buildings across the city ? as well as the Home Library Service, Nottingham Local Studies Library and Nottingham Performing Arts Library Service - have welcomed back Nottingham residents looking for a new read.

Library computers are back online, too ? and there are friendly staff on hand to help with whatever you need. There are plenty of measures in place to keep everyone safe, including temporary opening hours and the use of face coverings indoors.

If you?re not yet a member, you can join online for free [ [link removed] ] ? and access the library service?s collection of eBooks, storytelling videos and other great online resources within a few clicks.

Whether it?s browsing the shelves or browsing the web, there?s something for everyone at Nottingham City Libraries.

*Census ? Final deadline to be counted*

2021 census

The final deadline to complete the 2021 Census is Bank Holiday Monday 3 May. It?s extremely important for our city that you fill it in ? decisions are made on what facilities (such as schools, public transport like buses and trains, doctor?s surgeries etc) will be available in your community in the next few years based on the census.

If you haven?t yet filled it in because you can?t understand how, or you?ve lost your access code ? don?t worry. You can:

* Request a new code [ [link removed] ]
* Call 0800 141 2021 to get help

Remember ? you must complete the census by law. If you don?t, you could be fined ?1000.
