Hi John --
We're just over 100 days into the Biden administration, but clues are already emerging as to which Republicans will challenge Biden in 2024. And it looks like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is throwing his hat in the ring.
DeSantis is scheduled to travel to important presidential election states soon, including Pennsylvania and Nevada. If DeSantis decides to run, it's a clear sign that Republicans are doubling down on their worst impulses from the Trump years.
DeSantis was one of Trump's most vocal allies. He parroted the skepticism Trump had towards the coronavirus and trafficked in the same racist “China virus” and “Kung Flu” tropes that Trump did. DeSantis is directly responsible for the tens of thousands of COVID deaths in his state -- Florida is currently third in the country for new COVID cases. And he greatly contributed to the current national rhetoric and environment that is so hostile to AAPI Americans.
DeSantis made his name by stoking the flames of racial hatred. He spoke to violently anti-Muslim organizations, pushed for draconian punishments towards illegal immigrants, and allied himself with advisors with neo-Nazi ties.
If Gov. DeSantis thinks he can win the presidency in 2024, it says a lot about the state of the Republican Party today. We need to be ready to fight and win against candidates that will follow DeSantis' lead in the 2022 midterms.
