John,
Two days ago, Eva announced Frankie’s Law — a new immigration framework in memory of her friend, Frankie Madrid.
Frankie was a community activist in Flagstaff who was also undocumented. After a lawyer mishandled his DACA application, his life was further pushed into the shadows. After facing battles with depression and drugs, he was deported to Mexico by ICE in August of 2017. A few months later, he took his own life.
He was American in every way, he simply lacked a piece of paper.
Eva introduced Frankie’s Law so that no one has to suffer like Frankie did. Frankie’s Law includes, among other provisions, the following:
1.
Appoint
an
Immigration
Oversight
Committee
(w/majority
Indigenous
members)
2.
Normalize
status
of
undocumented
folks
3.
Reunite
families
who
were
deported
4.
Expand
the
Refugee
Act
5.
Abolish
ICE
6.
End
use
of
detention
centers
&
for-profit
prisons
For the past two days, Eva travelled around the district, hosting events in Flagstaff, Sedona, and Tucson alongside the People’s Defense Initiative of Tucson. These events focused on finding ways to create a country that knocks down walls and unites the continent rather than divides it.

It’s going to take all of us working together to make the systemic changes we want to see in this country. That means we need to help people like Eva — people willing to stand up for what’s right — make it to Congress.
