Contrary to popular belief, there aren't four seasons in North Carolina; There are 13 <[link removed]>. We're at the end of second summer before we finally hit fall weather next week. Some big news out of the job front as the country hit the lowest unemployment rate in 50 YEARS. The RNC and the Trump campaign put up some staggering fundraising numbers <[link removed]> and some new laws went into effect in NC this week. Let's dive into the stories you may have missed this week.

WHAT HAPPENED

STORIES FROM THE NATION

Anti-Semitic Rep. Rashida Tlaib decided to make some racist comments <[link removed]> this week talking about facial recognition technology, but the real story is the House Ethics panel reviewing some potential campaign finance violations. The Hill <[link removed]>

Cooperation with ICE has been discussed at length here in NC with HB 370, and Democrats continue to be on the wrong side. In New Jersey, the state's Attorney General is now trying to order all the sheriffs not to cooperate with ICE. Hot Air <[link removed]>

The Trump campaign and the RNC are putting up some serious fundraising numbers: a record $125 million for the 3rd quarter <[link removed]>. For reference, the Obama campaign raised $70M during the same time period in 2011. Campaign manager Brad Parscale outlined the $1B strategy and the 1.6 million volunteers (that means you!) for 2020. Forbes <[link removed]>

We've talked about this as well: it's important to grow the conservative movement for the future, and that means reaching out to groups that aren't traditionally seen as Republican and going to where they are. Sen. Tim Scott recognizes this need and details how he plans on helping diversify the Party. The Daily Signal <[link removed]>

STORIES FROM NC

Ever since approving the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, Governor Cooper has been trying to buy back the support of environmental extremists. To do so, he's putting forth a green energy proposal. Needless to say, it's not going well. Carolina Journal <[link removed]>

After seven Democrats voted for the budget back in June, rumor had it that Cooper invited them over to the Governor's Mansion and basically introduced them to their primary challengers if they voted to override the impending veto. Someone finally asked them about it. They doth protest too much, methinks. WRAL <[link removed]>

Let's look ahead to 2020. There are several counties that swung from blue to red in 2016, although one went the other way. In order to have more success in 2020 while taking back the NC Supreme Court, kicking Cooper out of office, and maintaining a majority in the NCGA, we'll have to expand on those wins and flip some more. Spectrum News <[link removed]>

I will repeat this ad nauseam: start educating voters now about the judicial races. We need to win back the state Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals circuit or these ridiculous lawsuits from Democrat groups that can't win at the ballot box will continue. Smoky Mountain News <[link removed]>

TRACKING YOUR REPRESENTATIVES

CONGRESS

A relatively quiet week in the House because all the air has been sucked up by the impeachment proceedings. That being said, the House passed a bill giving illegal immigrants electronic medical records <[link removed]> ahead of veterans. I kid you not.

The Senate passed a bill aimed at helping ransomware attacks <[link removed]> as the government agencies and private entities continue to come under sophisticated intrusions. They also passed a bill helping increase STEM initiatives in schools <[link removed]> and the Autism Care Act <[link removed]>, which the President signed into law.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

A couple laws went into effect this week, most notably the rideshare law aimed at protecting Uber and Lyft <[link removed]> users. With lots of things going digital these days, the House is looking into making your license plate digital <[link removed]>. The Senate has yet to take up the veto override of the budget, but they do plan on passing a few more mini-budgets <[link removed]> to force the hand of Cooper and legislative Democrats.
