Josh the capuchin monkey was one of these individuals. He was brought to the Monkey Sanctuary following an investigation Freedom for Animals carried out at an illegal zoo where he was being held captive. Josh had been given to the zoo by one of his previous 'owners'. Before that he'd lived with three different families as a 'pet'.
During our undercover investigation we found Josh living alone and so mentally disturbed that he had chewed off the end of his tail. Tragically he lived like this for three years, being kept in terrible conditions and with poor care - he was being fed junk food such as lollipops and cake.
After he was rescued, Josh found a new home at the sanctuary where he spent many happy years with others of his own kind. Upon arrival it was the first time he had seen another capuchin in over a decade. It is heartbreaking that he never made it back to the wild, but at least he finally found true companionship and love.
