John,
On Wednesday night, I had the distinct honor of delivering a response to President Joe Biden’s address to Congress on behalf of the Working Families Party. Now, I wanted to take this moment to share and reiterate some of what we talked about with you.
2020 was a year of unprecedented crisis in America. A global pandemic, an unprecedented economic collapse, a crisis of police killings of Black people, a climate crisis, and a crisis of democracy.
But amidst all of this, people stepped up to care for each other. We had neighbors delivering supplies to people in need. Essential workers risking their lives to take care of others. We had millions of Americans of every race rise up in grief to march against the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others. And it was those same working people who defeated Trump, elected President Biden, and delivered on a Democratic Congress to finally put an end to these crises.
But here’s the thing, John: people are still hurting. Just because we got rid of Donald Trump as our president — and just because we elected Joe Biden — doesn’t mean our problems are gone. Trump or no Trump, our society is still sick. It is still profoundly unequal and unjust.
I sincerely believe President Biden wants to make things better. But right now, he’s limiting his proposals to what he thinks Congress can pass — rather than rethinking what’s possible to achieve much-needed change.
Our communities are facing economic devastation. The climate crisis hasn’t gone anywhere. Police violence didn’t stop. Our democracy remains under attack. These aren’t problems that will go away with the usual solutions.
That’s why, in this historic moment, we must seize the opportunity to transform our nation into the one we deserve and take drastic action. We must demand more so we can all thrive, not just survive.
John, I’m proud to serve in Congress and fight for what we need in order to thrive. Since day one, I’ve always held President Biden accountable to our demands of change — and I’ll always ensure that the progressive perspective makes it to the White House. If you’re with me, please chip in $3 to support my leadership in Congress. Let’s grow our progressive movement, and keep demanding the change we deserve.
