I’ll never forget my visceral disgust when I first heard the news that children were being physically torn from their parents' arms under the Trump administration three years ago.
Today, I wish I could say that all children have been reunited, but it’s unfortunately not yet true. We’re working tirelessly to support our partners across the country, but there’s so much left to do.
And now, we as a nation are facing a test. A test of our moral character. A test of how we treat children in need. Despite all the pandering by politicians who are joyriding on boats on the border, or the DC pundits who are arguing about how all of this polls, what we’re really talking about is how we as a nation are going to treat children in need.
I knew it then and feel more emboldened than ever to say it now: Children belong in classrooms and playgrounds surrounded by their loved ones. Children should be loved, and they should be safe.
John, in honor of Children’s Day, or Día del Niño, our team in Mexico is delivering toys to the shelters we regularly support with medicine, cleaning supplies, and more. Because we believe that in addition to meeting basic needs, we have to do everything possible to try and bring some joy to these children’s lives -- even if it’s just a fleeting moment.
This Children’s Day the message we are sending is clear. We’ll stop at nothing to live by the values that our nation should live by: care, compassion, and dignity.
