Join the #KillTheBill National Day of Action: Saturday 1st May
Our ability to campaign against nuclear weapons is only as strong as our democratic freedom to dissent and protest. That’s why CND is joining the National Day of Action against the government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing, and Courts Bill this Saturday, May 1st.
Over forty events are taking place up and down the country - so there’s bound to be one near you.
The Bill is a fundamental attack on our right to protest.
As the planet burns and the UK increases its number of nuclear warheads by more than 40%, the government is intent on putting obstacles in the way of those who speak out and demonstrate for alternative policies and priorities.
The Bill introduces a new crime of ‘intentionally or recklessly causing public nuisance’. It would allow ten-year prison sentences to be imposed for toppling or damaging statues. And it would ban a wide range of protest activities from the area around Parliament.
The Bill is already facing huge opposition. Every party in Parliament aside from the Conservatives voted against the Bill. Dozens of trade unions, campaigners and community groups have joined a coalition to defeat the Bill, including CND. And some lawyers have even warned the bill violates international law.
CND will be taking to the streets this Saturday and we hope you will too. If you're in London look for the CND banner in Trafalgar Square.
