As a lethal pandemic, economic and physical insecurity, and violent conflict ravaged the world, democracy’s defenders sustained heavy new losses in their struggle against authoritarian foes, shifting the international balance in favor of tyranny.
Freedom House's annual Freedom in the World report found that the Asia-Pacific region faced growing threats to freedom of expression and assembly in 2020. Overall freedom in the region declined, as the countries experiencing deterioration outnumbered those with improvements. At the same time, just 6 percent of the population now lives in a Free country, down from 39 percent the previous year.
Please join Freedom House and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy for a moderated discussion on these findings, with a special focus on the political rights and civil liberties of India, Myanmar, and Hong Kong.
Register now to attend this virtual event on Monday, May 3 at 9 p.m. ET (Tuesday, May 4 at 9 a.m. Taiwan time).
