John,
Last week, in passing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, 94 Senators made it clear that they're listening to the AAPI community.
But one senator wanted it known that he didn't support protecting Asian Americanns against hate crimes: Missouri Senator Josh Hawley.
The senator, who also saluted white supremacists before they stormed the Capitol on January 6, claims his opposition is about freedom of speech -- but we know better. This isn't about the legislation in question -- this is about Hawley fundraising off being a racist.
Hawley knows this is exactly the kind of move that'll energize his racist supporters. It'll give him an excuse to bring his hateful rhetoric back into the spotlight on Fox News and conservative media, where millions of Americans will be listening.
Hawley isn't up for reelection until 2024, John. But our work started yesterday. The only way to defeat Hawley and dissuade him from a presidential run is to attack the GOP's white nationalist agenda right now.
Our team is working to replace white nationalists in Congress with AAPI leaders who listen to their constituents. That means expanding our razor-thin majorities with progressive candidates we can count on. It means investing in the right campaigns so that racists like Hawley find themselves with less and less allies in Washington.
