Law Enforcement News Los Angeles Police Officer Shot In ‘Gun Battle' With Burglar, Suspect Also Shot And In Custody An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was hospitalized following a "gun battle" that erupted when he interrupted a thief stealing his police gear from his personal car on Wednesday. The cop and the suspect were both in stable condition at a local hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the shootout, Police Chief Michel Moore said. Based on the preliminary investigation, Moore said police believe the officer, who he didn’t immediately name, and a female companion were walking down from the officer’s apartment on Vesper Avenue in the Van Nuys neighborhood to his car in the building’s subterranean garage at about 2:25 p.m. when they realized a Hispanic male was sitting in the car. The officer’s duty bag with his police gear was stored inside the vehicle. And the man was wearing the officer’s bulletproof vest. The officer, armed with a backup weapon, went to confront the thief, who had his primary firearm that had also left in the car, Moore said. "That altercation turns into what we believe to be a gun battle between the two of them," Moore said. The rolling shootout led out of the garage and into an outdoor breezeway, based on the trail of blood and shell casings, according to Moore. The suspect finally fell to the ground after taking shots to the shoulder, arm and leg, and began removing the officer’s vest, Moore said. The officer than took back his firearm and returned to the garage, put the guns next to his vehicle, and collapsed after having suffered two gunshots to the chest and one to the thigh during the gun battle. Moore said he had spoken to the officer, who was stable and undergoing surgery. The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union for LAPD union, tweeted that its members were "praying for the full recovery of our officer who was shot today." FOX News Wives Of LAPD Officers Talk About The Impact Of Current Police Climate Three wives of police officers from the LAPD are sharing their stories about their personal struggles navigating the current climate of policing. Amanda, Christine and Cheri are all married to LAPD officers who have served in the Department for more than 20 years. "We were not prepared for the amount of hatred and violence, name-calling and just the blow to our whole family. It's been devastating for the children," said Christine whose husband has been a part of the LAPD for 26 years. Christine said her children are struggling with anxiety. "It's scary. We don't know when we say goodbye if that's the last time and our children have anxiety over it," said Christine. Cheri, who has worked in law enforcement for 31 years and is married to a man who has worked for the LAPD for 26 years, also talked about some of the concerns. "The majority of our citizens love us and want us in their communities to help them, to be there for them, to serve the community like we know how and the extra stress is real. The majority of officers are good people who are working hard. That's it and we would appreciate everybody's support in understanding we are human and we're just out there trying to serve our community," said Cheri. FOX 11 Three Injured In Los Angeles Stabbing, Suspect In Custody Several people were injured in a stabbing attack Wednesday in South Los Angeles and a suspect was taken into custody. There was no word on what precipitated the attack, which was reported about 3:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 43rd Street near Vermont Avenue, according to Officer Tony Im of the LAPD Media Relations Division. Three people were taken to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity, Im said. A suspect was taken into custody at the scene, but no other details were immediately released. CBS 2 One Person Shot On Ocean Front Walk, Police Looking For Suspect The Los Angeles Police Department is looking for the person who shot a 23-year-old male at Sunset Boulevard and Ocean Front Walk. The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, according to the LAPD. Police say the victim was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. No further details are known about the suspect at this time. It's unknown if the shooting was gang -or transient related. Venice Current Gunman In Deadly L.A. Shooting Rampage Had Cache Of Weapons At Home, Possessed AR-15: Sources A gunman who went on a shooting rampage in Los Angeles on Tuesday — killing two people and wounding two others — had an arsenal of weapons at his home and possessed a legally purchased AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, law enforcement sources told The Times as more details about the incident emerged. The suspect, who was fatally shot by police after a standoff on a Fullerton highway, lived in southeast Los Angeles County, according to two sources with knowledge of the investigation. On Tuesday, LAPD officials had said they recovered a handgun they believed was used in all the shootings. Police were investigating whether the weapons found in the gunman’s home were legal. The man’s motivation for spraying bullets at five different locations remains unclear. It does not appear that he knew the victims, the sources said. KTLA 5 Suspected Gang Members Accused Of Manufacturing And Selling Cocaine In South LA Arrested Law enforcement Wednesday arrested 19 defendants, most of whom are suspected members and associates of a street gang named in federal grand jury indictments alleging the manufacture and sales of crack cocaine in and around the Nickerson Gardens public housing projects in South Los Angeles. The 19 people arrested are among 22 defendants charged in nine federal indictments filed in Los Angeles that allege violations of federal narcotics and firearms laws, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. In addition to those arrested during the operation dubbed “Loyalty Matters,” one defendant is already in custody on unrelated charges and authorities are continuing to search for two others. During the investigation, authorities allegedly seized 26 firearms -- including five “ghost guns,” or firearms lacking serial numbers -- over two pounds of crack and 12 pounds of methamphetamine, according to prosecutors. The primary indictment centers on Damion “Fatts” Baker, 43, and Tony “T-Bone” Carr, 49, both documented Watts-based gang members, according to prosecutors. The 15-count indictment also charges Baker's alleged network of narcotics suppliers, manufacturers and distributors. NBC 4 LAPD Seeks Other Victims Of Man Charged With Sexually Abusing Children As Young As 2 Los Angeles police detectives on Wednesday asked for help to locate other potential victims of a man who has been charged with sexually abusing multiple boys, including at least one who was a toddler at the time. An investigation into Juan Ramon Sanchez, now 44, began when several victims recently came forward to allege they were molested by him in the Mission Hills area between June and December 1994, according to a LAPD news release. Inmate records indicate he turned 18 that June. Two more victims were later identified, both of whom lived in Lancaster when they allege the incidents occurred in 2002, according to the release. In each case, Sanchez is suspected of inviting underage boys into his home and molesting them. The victims ages ranged from 2 to 17 years old, and included runaways and foster children who lived at the residence, police said. On Feb. 16, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a total of 26 counts against Sanchez, including lewd acts upon a child, oral copulation, sodomy of a person under 14 and continuous sexual abuse, all felonies. Sanchez was arrested in Las Vegas eight days later, after an extradition warrant was issued for his arrest. KTLA 5 Driver Leads LAPD On Chase, Crashes Suspected Stolen Vehicle In West Hollywood, 3 In Custody A driver crashed a possibly stolen vehicle in West Hollywood after leading officers on a chase late Wednesday night. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the chase briefly happened a little after 9:45 p.m. The chase ended in a multiple-vehicle wreck in the 7400 block of West Sunset Boulevard, LAPD said. According to LAPD, the suspect hit a parked car, then hit another car that was driving down the street. The crash left five people hurt, three of which from the police chase suspect vehicle, LAPD told FOX 11. All three from the suspect vehicle were taken into custody, LAPD said. Officials did not specify their conditions but all are expected to be OK, LAPD told FOX 11. FOX 11 Silver Alert Issued For Missing Man, Last Seen In Marina del Rey A Silver Alert was issued Wednesday for a 75-year-old man who suffers from an undisclosed medical condition, may become disoriented and was last seen in Marina del Rey. Shedric Hunter was last seen at about 4 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Lincoln Boulevard and Mindanao Way, according to the California Highway Patrol, which issued the alert on behalf of the Los Angeles Police Department. Hunter is Black, 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds, with black graying hair and brown eyes. Anyone who sees Hunter was asked to call 911. The Silver Alert program was established to issue and coordinate alerts involving the unexplained or suspicious disappearance of elderly, developmentally disabled or cognitively impaired individuals, according to the CHP. MyNewsLA.com 2 Innocent People Killed When Drugged-Driver Slams Into Car During Pursuit Near LAX An innocent man and woman were killed when a suspect under pursuit slammed into their car near Los Angeles International Airport in Inglewood late Wednesday night. The collision occurred on Glasgow Avenue, near Olive street, at about 10:40 p.m. California Highway Patrol officers were in pursuit of a pickup truck which had just run a red light, a CHP spokesperson told CBSLA. Less than a minute into the pursuit, the truck slammed into a sedan. The driver of the sedan, a man, was rushed to a hospital, where he died, according to CHP. His female passenger was pronounced dead on scene. Their names were not immediately released. Both were in their 20s or 30s, CHP said. The male suspect, who investigators believe was under the influence of drugs, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, CHP disclosed. The exact circumstances of the crash are under investigation. It’s unclear exactly what charges the suspect might face. CBS 2 2 Inglewood Women Sentenced To Prison For Scheming To Defraud Medi-Cal Of Over $500K An Inglewood woman and her mother-in-law were sentenced Wednesday to federal prison for scheming to defraud Medi-Cal out of more than $500,000, the U.S. Department of Justice said. Mesbel Mohamoud, 48, was sentenced to 18 months and her mother-in-law, 66-year-old Erlinda Abella, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, according to the DOJ. They were also ordered to pay $260,101 in restitution each. According to prosecutors, Mohamoud was the owner and executive director of The New You Center, Inc., a substance abuse treatment facility in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Abella co-founded the center with Mhamoud in 2005 and was the company’s program director. The facility was authorized to provide medically necessary services through the Drug Medi-Cal program to adults and teenagers in L.A. County. From January 2009 to December 2015, prosecutors said the center submitted false and fraudulent claims for counseling sessions that were either not conducted at all, conducted at unauthorized locations or did not comply with Drug Medi-Cal regulations. CBS 2 Major California Cities See Sharp Increase In Homicides, Car Thefts During COVID Pandemic Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco have seen a significant rise in homicides and car thefts in 2020, according to California Department of Justice data reviewed by the Public Policy Institute of California. Los Angeles recorded 332 homicides, a 40% increase from the year prior. Oakland, with 102 homicides, saw a 36% increase. San Francisco saw 48 homicides, a 17% increase, while San Diego had 55 homicides, a 10% increase over the year prior, according to PPIC. Car thefts rose by 24% in those four cities, while commercial burglaries increased by 26%, though commercial burglaries actually decreased by 26% in Oakland. “Commercial burglaries jumped significantly in May 2020, coinciding with civil unrest after the killing of George Floyd, and have declined in early 2021, almost reaching pre-pandemic levels,” according to the PPIC. The rise comes despite the fact that overall, violent and property crimes in those cities remain below pre-pandemic levels, according to PPIC. Sacramento Bee Delaware Police Officer Declared Clinically Dead After Being Attacked While Responding To Fight A Delaware police officer who was attacked early Sunday while responding to a fight at a housing subdivision in Delmar was declared clinically dead Wednesday. State Police said Cpl. Keith Heacook with the Delmar Police Department is currently on life support in order to donate his organs on Friday. Heacook suffered a traumatic head injury after he was assaulted by 30-year-old Randon Wilkerson inside a home at the Yorkshire Estates Community shortly after 5 a.m., according to police. Dispatchers began checking on Heacook and received no response. Additional officers were then sent to the scene. A Wicomico County Sheriffs Office Deputy and a Delaware State Trooper arrived to find the officer unconscious in the residence. Heacook was first transported to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, but was later taken to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, part of the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Delmar police Chief Ivan Barkley said Heacook, a 22-year police veteran, responded to the call alone. FOX 11 NYPD: Officer Killed In Hit-and-Run By Intoxicated Driver The NYPD is mourning veteran police officer Anastasios Tsakos, who was killed in the line of duty early Tuesday. According to ABC 7, Tsakos was struck while working the scene of a separate fatal crash. The driver, identified as Jessica Beauvais, initially fled but was arrested soon after, police said. She was arrested for DWI and vehicular manslaughter, among a slew of other related charges. Officer Tsakos was a 14-year veteran of the NYPD, according to ABC 7. He leaves behind two young children. "We stand here this morning reminded once again, in law enforcement, there is no such thing as a routine job," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a statement to ABC 7. "We stand here devastated and trying to pick up the pieces of what is a shattered home and a shattered NYPD family." City Attorney and Coalition Reaches Resolution On U.S. Census Lawsuit City Attorney Mike Feuer announced Thursday that a coalition that includes the city and county of Los Angeles reached a resolution in a federal lawsuit filed against the U.S. Census Bureau to extend the census processing time that was previously reduced by four months, a move the plaintiffs alleged would have made it impossible to count each person. The coalition of civil rights groups, civic organizations, tribal and local governments filed the lawsuit to ensure the 2020 Census count was not reduced. Under a directive by the former Trump administration, the Census Bureau attempted to reduce the time to collect data and process results from 8 1/2 months to 4 1/2 months.
