He's already taking action on ghost guns by nominating David Chipman, a gun safety advocate, to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), where he can address illegal firearms that are taking lives across the nation. But the NRA is fighting hard to stop his confirmation. They’re spending $2 million dollars in negative ad campaigns against Chipman in states whose Senators might support him -- including Pennsylvania.¹ The NRA knows Senator Toomey is a key vote on Chipman. In Pennsylvania, we have a plan to get Chipman confirmed. We’re organizing law enforcement to speak out for his confirmation, and we’re using our coalition of faith leaders and community partners to highlight the need to address illegal firearm trafficking. And we know how to take on the NRA because we’ve done it before. We fought against their attempts to sue Philadelphia and Pittsburgh for protecting their citizens against gun violence.² And we brought a swift end to Philadelphia Police’s partnership with the NRA to teach an ineffective “Eddie Eagle” gun education program to the city’s children. Meanwhile, the NRA is in the middle of a Congressional bankruptcy trial, and their CEO Wayne LaPierre is currently making headlines for hunting elephants and cutting off their tails with his wife.³ The NRA is falling apart. But they’re still raising huge amounts of money from their supporters. We can’t match them dollar for dollar, but with enough resources, we can take them on and defeat their dangerous agenda once and for all. |
