This Month
This was an important but draining month regarding the future of policing and our collective continued search for true justice. The murderer of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was found guilty on all counts, in a far too-rare example of police accountability. To inform members of the latest developments and discuss the path forward on reimagining public safety in our communities and what activists can do to help, People For held a digital briefing to discuss the verdict in the case and the future of justice in America. Virginia’s political landscape over the past several years has been the story of progressive change that we are working to see replicated at the national level. It’s an inspiring story that People For the American Way and our members have been, and remain, deeply invested in helping to shape alongside our network of committed Virginia activists. Read on for what we’re tracking in Virginia right now, and stay tuned to our channels for more ways to help us keep moving progress forward in Virginia! There’s no question that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris hit the ground running on January 20, and they've made impressive progress during their first 100 days in office. Yet, despite a Senate Democratic majority that shares their robust agenda, a significant number of “we, the people” priorities have once again landed in Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard. The only way to set them free is to take away McConnell’s minority veto power. Right before President Biden's speech to the joint session of Congress on April 28, our Young Elected Officials Network hosted an event on voting rights and defending democracy. People For's Deputy Director of Leadership Programs Markus Batchelor and Georgia House Representative Park Cannon met virtually to discuss the work that must be done at the White House and in Congress to expand and defend the right to vote. Don’t miss out on this engaging conversation - watch now! The Young Elected Officials Network is a nonpartisan program of our affiliate People For the American Way Foundation.
