Dear Friend, This is a recipe for disaster: Republican-led states are waging a war on voting rights, and we’re running out of the resources we need to fight back. Republican-led states have passed more than 360 bills to make voting more difficult.1 And now that the census has been published, many of these right-wing extremists will use gerrymandering to redraw voting districts and try to guarantee themselves a majority to block a progressive agenda for years to come.2 Demand Progress is mobilizing the grassroots, urging Congress to end the filibuster and pass H.R. 1 to reverse these attacks on voting rights. But our donations have fallen off—even as this work to protect democracy is more important than ever before. This is a crucial moment. If we don’t pick up the pace, Mitch McConnell and his fellow extremists may succeed in undermining our democracy. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: The federal government could put a stop to these anti-democratic bills being passed in the states. But the filibuster is allowing Mitch McConnell to block any legislation, including H.R. 1. —even though a full 68 percent of voters want to see this legislation enacted.3 We need to act boldly—and quickly—to pass major reforms to protect voting rights and take on corporate lobbyists. But our online donations are down thirty percent from where they were this time last year. The far right isn’t far away. The Senate is still split 50–50, the House is closely split, too, and there’s a 6–3 right-wing majority on the Supreme Court. Even as President Biden lays out a more progressive agenda, his opponents are mobilizing in the states to undermine voting rights as one way to stop that agenda from becoming law. Friend, this is the worst possible time to be experiencing a fundraising shortfall. We can't keep up our fight to end the filibuster, pass H.R. 1, and protect our very democracy from authoritarianism without your help. Thanks for standing with us. Robert Cruickshank, Sources: 1.
