Dear John,

Did you know that it was Earth Day on Thursday, 22 April? To mark the day and show our support for environmental protection of the Earth, we released new data to show the true impact of climate change on people who are forced to flee.

The message is clear!

Explore the data and you’ll see that climate change is not only driving displacement through disasters like floods and hurricanes, but it’s intensifying conflicts with food insecurity, water shortages and limited access to essential resources.

But it’s not all bad news. UNHCR runs projects to support refugees, settlements and host communities to fight climate change and look after our environment. We dare you not to be inspired by the determination of Annick, or the optimism of Ali!

Restoring Sudan’s forest
South Sudanese refugees and the host community in the White Nile State of Sudan have worked together to plant around 1 million acacia trees. As well as replenishing an area that has suffered mass deforestation, the project has provided people with new skills along with resources for cooking and building.

Inspiring others in Jordan
Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan is just a few kilometres away from the Syrian border and is home to more Syrian refugees than any other camp in the world. However, almost everyone recycles their trash thanks to a UNHCR-backed initiative that provides jobs and brings the community together.

When people are empowered, they can be part of the solution, fighting climate change in new and innovative ways. Thanks for helping us in our mission to protect and empower refugees all over the world!

Sincerely,

Breno Valentini
