Yesterday, President Biden introduced the American Families Plan. I’m not being overly dramatic when I say it could truly revolutionize the opportunities we provide kids in this country. If passed into law, it would provide universal pre-kindergarten for 3 and 4 year olds and expand access, quality and affordability of child care for younger kids and their families, while increasing wages for child care workers. That’s huge, but a plan this ambitious is going to take a ton of work from champions for children like you to get passed, John. Working parents have long faced a struggle finding high quality care and learning programs before their kids start school at age 5. In many states, these programs can cost more than in-state college tuition! And in far too many places, there aren’t nearly enough spaces in programs to meet the need. This problem is especially difficult for Black, Latino and indigenous kids, as well as children living in rural America. Their parents often need to drop out of the workforce to care for them, exacerbating issues of poverty.
