Worse Than Watergate
==================

When it comes to political scandals, the first word that probably comes to mind is Watergate-the standard by which all other scandals are judged. Former President Richard Nixon faced impeachment for abusing his power to go after political opponents and engaging in a cover-up to hide his misconduct from federal investigators, Congress, and the American people. President Donald Trump's actions with Ukraine seem to follow a similar arc. Yet Trump's alleged misconduct is even worse: It involved an effort to pressure a foreign country to interfere in American democracy. Trump has taken the core aspects of the Watergate scandal and injected his unique brand of corruption, threatening to weaken U.S. democracy and national security in the process. This is not a modern-day Watergate; it's something far worse.

In Memoriam

This week, the Center for American Progress lost a dear colleague, loving husband and father, and powerful advocate for Puerto Rico. Enrique Fern?ndez-Toledo, director of the Puerto Rico Relief and Economic Policy Initiative at CAP, brought passion, expertise, humor, and kindness to our workplace and this critical work. As Vice President and chief of staff Erin Cohan noted <[link removed]>, "We are devastated by the untimely loss of this incredible human being.... He was a true progressive and fought every day, in solidarity, to ensure his work focused on justice and human rights and centered the voices of vulnerable populations." The American Progress family misses Enrique dearly and will carry on his trailblazing, important work.

Building Diversity Into the Federal Judiciary
<[link removed]>
Diversity adds immense value to the judiciary. While previous presidential administrations sought to diversify the bench, President Trump has appointed the least racially and ethnically diverse group of federal judges of any president over the past three decades. Here's what we can do to fix it. [This report was also featured in Vox <[link removed]>.]
