THIS WEEK IN MISSILE DEFENSE September 28 - October 4, 2019 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch This Week in Missile Defense Video On Monday, the National Council of Resistance of Iran presented evidence that Tehran carried out the damaging September 14 attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities from a base inside Iran. The report contained satellite images of Omidiyeh Air Base, missile production plants, and the location of tunnels used to hide Ya-Ali cruise missiles. On Tuesday, China showed off new equipment in Beijing – including the YJ-18A anti-ship cruise missile, Dongfeng-21D (DF-21D) “Carrier Killer,” DF-26 intermediate range missile, DF-41 intercontinental ballistic missile, and DF-17 hypersonic glide missiles – at a parade to mark seventy years since the People’s Republic’s founding. On Wednesday, North Korea carried out a test of its new Pukguksong-3, its first underwater launched ballistic missile test in three years. The missile reached an altitude of 910 km and traveled 450 km before landing in the East Sea. If flown on a more standard trajectory, it is estimated the Pukgukson-3 would have a 1,900 km range. The test came days before the U.S. and North Korea are expected to restart high-level talks on North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs in Sweden this weekend. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country is helping China build a new missile defense system to defend against ballistic and cruise missile. Details of the size and make-up of the missile defense system is currently unknown. China currently employs a limited number of Russian S-300 and S-400 missile defense systems. MISSILE DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Major Benjamin Brown MAJ Brown was commissioned in December 2007 from Colorado State University Pueblo into the Field Artillery. His first duty station following Officer Basic Course was Ft. Hood, Texas, where he was assigned to various units within the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Calvary Division, and deployed to Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn (2009-10 and 2011). Upon graduation from Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, MAJ Brown was assigned to the Office of the Program Manager - Saudi Arabian National Guard, before being stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado, during the transition of 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division to a Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Upon leaving active duty in 2015, MAJ Brown was assigned to 169th Fires Brigade and subsequently commanded Alpha Battery, 3-157 Field Artillery (HIMARS). Following command, he was assigned as the Current Operations Officer of Alpha Crew, 100th Missile Defense Brigade and completed the transition to Air Defense Artillery. He is currently the deputy director for Alpha Crew. MAJ Brown is married to Mrs. Elizabeth Brown and has two sons, Zen and Rhett.
