Congress has a constitutional obligation to serve as a check on the president and hold him accountable if and when he violates his oath of office, abuses his power, poses a danger to the country, or breaks the law.
By soliciting foreign interference in our elections, President Donald Trump has done all of these things. Not only is it appropriate for the House to begin impeachment proceedings, but it is required of them by their oath of office.
Yet Congressman Katko continues to refuse to hold this president accountable. In fact, he doesn't even acknowledge that it's part of his job.
It is remarkable that in his comments over the last few days, John Katko has repeatedly referred to "the Democrats" or "them" investigating the president, as though he himself has no responsibility here.
He is our elected representative. It is both his responsibility and obligation to investigate.

The facts are clear. President Donald Trump asked a foreign government to interfere in our election. He admitted doing this. The memo of his phone call with the Ukrainian president corroborates this. The whistleblower complaint corroborates this.
President Trump's action undermines our national security. It is an abuse of power and a violation of the law.
This is exactly what the framers of our constitution had in mind when they created the power of impeachment. Their chief concerns were foreign interference in American affairs and a president who would use the power of their office for personal gain.
And yet Congressman Katko will not acknowledge the truth that's right in front of us.
Please join me in telling John Katko: It's time to face the truth, stand up for the people of central and western New York, and take action to hold President Trump accountable.

We've seen this before -- he did the same thing with the Mueller report.
There are two possibilities: Either John Katko doesn't understand the situation, or he's putting partisan politics ahead of the truth.
Either way, he is failing the people of central and western New York. And by refusing to hold this president accountable, John Katko is encouraging further abuse of power and sanctioning this behavior for future presidents.

No one is above the law, including the president.
Congressman Katko needs to stand up for the rule of law. If he can't do that while also addressing issues like the cost of healthcare, gun safety, and the climate crisis, then he should be fired.
And come November 2020, he will be.
