There’s no question that the path to control of the House of Representatives -- in 2022 and beyond -- runs straight through this year’s redistricting process. In fact, the path to a majority will likely run through just four states where Republicans control the redistricting process: Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Right now, Republicans need to flip just five seats to take the House. And Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia are projected to gain a combined four seats thanks to reapportionment.

But here’s the scary thing: Republican gerrymandering in those states alone could cause Democrats to be underrepresented by as many as 11 seats! This is their plan for winning back the majority in 2022: Successfully manipulate the maps to flip enough seats before a single vote is even cast.

That’s why it’s crucial that we successfully pressure redistricting officials to draw fair maps this year. But we’re also being realistic -- public pressure by itself isn’t going to fix this problem. Where necessary, the NDRC will support plaintiffs in lawsuits to protect states’ redistricting processes from manipulation and fight for fair results.
