Friend,

It has been great to see so many of you over the last two months at the various local Republican events throughout our great state. I look forward to seeing many more Republicans across Kansas as I continue to travel the state.

We are almost one year away from the 2020 elections so the Kansas Republican Party is hard at work. We will be focusing our efforts on messaging, fundraising, and training in the coming months. While November 2020 seems far in the distance, it will be here before we know it, so it is critical we hit the ground running now. Kansas Democrats are energized and confident so we cannot take anything for granted. Instead, we must be even more energized and organized as a Party.

All of you are crucial to our success next November. We need involved Republicans who are willing to help make sure we keep Kansas red!

Regards,

Mike Kuckelman
Chair - Kansas GOP

** State Update: Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt
------------------------------------------------------------
Friend,

Over the past nine months, we’ve made a lot of improvements at the Kansas Insurance Department to better serve Kansans. There is another big change coming with our move to 1300 SW Arrowhead Drive in Topeka. You may be wondering why the move? I’d like to share with you a bit about our move, the reasons behind it and why I think it will benefit Kansans.

Why are we moving?
In 2017, the Kansas Legislature passed a bill to combine the Securities Commission and Insurance Department with the objective of improved efficiencies. We have followed through on this directive with administrative efficiencies, combining the communication divisions, human resources divisions, accounting divisions, etc. However, operating in separate space, one on each side of the capitol, is not efficient. Some of the other factors in deciding to move include:

* The Securities Commission lease ends June 2020, and a new lease of their space was going to increase significantly.
* The building that houses the Insurance Department staff is a historical building that was never designed to function as an administrative office.
* The building does not provide space suitable for all 130+ employees (both Kansas Insurance Department and Securities Commission) to work. KDHE previously determined the half floors that were previously occupied had poor air quality, did not have sufficient ceiling height and were unsafe to work in for any length of time.
* The Insurance Department building is experiencing substantial maintenance and capital improvements expenses. Between those expenses and the projected new rent of securities current space it was financially prudent to look for new space and follow through on the objectives the Legislature envisioned when they passed the 2017 bill.

Why this location?
* There are only so many buildings available in Topeka with enough square footage to house 130+ employees.
* A thorough evaluation of downtown building inventory was done and only one facility could meet our space requirements, but would have cost 33% more and we could not secure a lease beyond five years.
* The new building has up-to-date wiring and technology, which will allow our systems to run more efficiently and improve response times.
* The new location has adequate parking and better access for Kansans who stop in and need assistance.

Why this is good for Kansans?
* We will be able to add some additional operational efficiencies from being housed under one roof.
* Taxpayers will no longer endure the cost of maintenance on a nearly 100-year-old building.

* The Securities Commission will no longer pay $20,000 a year for parking in an adjacent parking garage downtown. (Yes, you read that correctly. I was equally appalled when I found that in the budget.)
* We will be able to cross-train Kansas Insurance Department employees and Securities Commission employees to better serve the public.
* The new building is much more accessible for those with disabilities.

My goal with this move is to provide better service, more efficiently. We hope to be in the new building by Thanksgiving but certainly before the 2020 legislative session. I hope you will stop in to see us at our new location!

Sincerely,
Vicki Schmidt
Kansas Insurance Commissioner
