John,
House Republicans have recently introduced a slate of bills that claim to address climate change by using “natural solutions” only, while completely ignoring the need to transition off fossil fuels. This is not a serious solution.
To be clear, shoring up our natural resources to help pull carbon out of the atmosphere will be important — SEEC has called for reforestation, ecosystem restoration and policies to support healthy soils, but doing any of this without policies to transition us to a clean-energy economy is ridiculously and dangerously insufficient.
And still more concerning, at least one of these bills claiming to support natural solutions proposes to “ease requirements” under the National Environmental Policy Act — a law requiring the federal government to consider the environmental impacts of its actions.
Proposals like these remind us what’s at stake if we don’t maintain and grow our coalition in Congress. Failing to win key elections next fall will mean fatally handicapping efforts to seriously address climate change.
Will you rush a contribution so that we can protect our SEEC members in Congress and elect more pro-environment representatives? [[link removed]]
