Hi John,

Last week, I voted alongside my colleagues in the House to make Washington, D.C. a state -- a historic measure that's long overdue.

The more than 700,000 Americans who call our nation's capital home don't currently have a vote in Congress or a say in the laws that govern them. This is a voting rights issue that needs to be rectified as soon as possible.

This statehood vote passing the House is the result of decades of advocacy, and I'm proud to have voted to end this affront to our nation's democratic principles. But Republican leaders are calling D.C. statehood an “unconstitutional power grab” by Democrats. They're willing to sacrifice the voices and votes of D.C.'s citizens in order to prevent another two seats from being added to the Senate.

That's why today, I need your help to put pressure on the Senate to pass this legislation. We've only gotten so far in this fight because public opinion has shifted over the past decade. I'm hoping for 100 responses by midnight to show the GOP that we won't stand for this inequality any longer. Please, tell us:

Do you support statehood for Washington, D.C.?
YES   NO

Thank you so much for adding your voice to this important issue.

Mary Gay
